Getting to Brecon via Merthyr Tydfil

This page is about getting to Brecon by Public Transport. For other information about staying at Nythfa House see the page here.

If you are going to Brecon from London or the south then I think its worth considering going via Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil railway station and then by bus.

In order to make the journey more relaxing I stayed a night in a Premier Inn in Cardiff (I put some pictures on this web page) however I could have done the journey in one day.

I have tried this route once, when I traveled I found it a better experience than going via Newport and Abergavenny. It may take a bit longer but I found the connections easier and less crowded. So I will go this way next time I am fortunate enough to go to Brecon. The train may be a bit more expensive but the bus is cheaper so there is not much difference.

Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil uses modern electric trains and they are frequent. It takes about an hour because there are a lot of stops.

As a comparison this is what I got when I searched for an open return (with SRC).

This is just a random example, your mileage may vary.

Here is the train leaving Cardiff Central:

and arriving at Merthyr Tydfil:

There is a Morrisons with a cafe behind the station.

From here, to get to the bus station, you can walk along the platform on the left of the picture above and then along the path on the right.

Alternatively you could go through the shopping area.

This route seems simpler, although not very scenic.

Turn right here along this road:

Then you ca see the bus station on the right:

The bus station is covered and has a cafe.

At first you may not see the T4 bus on the timetable as all the other busses are stagecoach numbers but the T4 is at the bottom and it is the bay at the end.

Don't get of the bus in the centre of Brecon, wait for the bus interchange:

Brecon Bus Interchange to HF House

From Brecon bus interchange it is an easy walk to the HF House as described on the page here.

Remember English bus passes don't work in Wales so you will have to pay for your bus ticket (unless the journey starts or ends in England which this does not). scan

About This Site

Here is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited.

The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost.

This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website.
