Getting to Brecon by Public Transport
| This page is about getting to Nythfa House by Public Transport. For other information about staying at Nythfa House see the page here. |
There is not a railway station in Brecon itself but there are bus services from the stations at Abergavenny, Merthyr Tydfil, Hereford, Llanrindod and Newtown.

- If you are traveling from the north then busses from Abergavenny are a good option. I have put pictures and information on this page. Bus 43 goes via the scenic route next to the river Usk and the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal and bus X43 goes more directly along the A40. The X43 also starts off going to Station Road but I think its safer to walk through the housing estate to the bus station.
- If you are traveling from London and the south then consider going via Cardiff and Merthry Tydfil. I have used this route and I have put pictures and information on this page.
Remember English bus passes don't work. I was told by some fellow guests that English bus passes work on the Hereford to Brecon bus because part of the journey is in England but I have not tried that myself.
Brecon Bus Interchange to HF House
Catch a bus to Brecon, for instance, via Abergavenny (as described on this page) or via Merthry Tydfil (as described on this page)
Get off at Brecon bus interchange here:

Walk from the bus interchange (Heol Gouesnou) to Alexanrda Road which is parallel with it and just above it.

These are one way streets but always look both ways before crossing them. If you see people driving the wrong way along these roads that will be your fellow guests arriving. In 2023, when I was having my tea & scones, I asked people what their journey was like (as one does) and at least 3 separate people said that they had driven the wrong way down the one way streets to get there. Some said they had not seen the one way signs until it was too late. The others said they had seen the signs but they had ignored them as the could not find the correct route. If there are any HF drivers reading this, the blue circles with white arrows mean one way, they are not optional.

Turn right onto Belle Vue Road.

This gets to the drive to the HF house (there are some private houses along the drive).

Buses at Brecon
The buses appear to be run by various bus companies and the franchises can change so its important to get the latest timetables from the company operating the route when you go. There may be some overall information about the routes on the Transport for Wales website here:
https://tfw.wales/ways-to-travel/bus
TFW brand the longer-distance bus services as TrawsCymru and they have the timetables for these on their website:
TFW are also involved with the demand-responsive fflecsi bus services:
Another overview of the bus services may be Powys Council:

When travelling to Brecon, using public transport, a lot of people catch the train to Abergavenny and then use the X43/43 to Brecon.
When searching for this service online a lot of the sources will show the operator as 'Stagecoach South Wales' but, last time I checked the operator had changed to Williams Coaches, it may change again so you sometimes have to do a bit of research to get the latest information and don't believe what AI tells you.

Last time I checked Williams Coaches operate these routes:
- X43/43 Brecon - Abergavenny
- T4 Merthyr Tydfil - Brecon - Llandrindod Wells - Newtown (branded as "TrawsCymru")
- X80 Brecon - Llandovery
- 40A/40B Brecon Town Service
Lloyds Coaches operate:
- T2 Bangor - Caernarfon- Porthmadog - Dolgellau - Machynlleth - Aberystwyth (branded as "TrawsCymru")
Adventure Travel operate:
- T6 Brecon - Swansea (branded as "TrawsCymru")
Sargeants operate:

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
