Y Gaer - Roman Fort
There is a nice walk from Brecon to the east.
From Brecon I walked along the north bank of the Usk. At a park (The Promenade) cross the Fenni Fach Road and follow a footpath going north-east. It is near the old railway to Brecon but does not follow it exactly. The path goes over a bridge over a stream and through some woods.
When you get to a farm you can take a short diversion to the remains of the Y Gaer Roman fort. There is no signposting to the site, it is on private farmland. It is in the care of Cadw (the historic environment service of the Welsh Government). So you need to search around to find it.
There are remnants of stone walls, part of three gatehouses and corner guard towers:
I then went north along a lane and footpath to Battle and Cradoc.
From Cradoc I went west along a lane and then walked back to Brecon over Pen y Crug (331m) which has remains of Iron Age hillfort:

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
