Getting to Brecon via Abergavenny

This page is about getting to Brecon by Public Transport. For other information about staying at Nythfa House see the page here.

There is a pedestrianised shopping street in Abergavenny although you don't need to go there to get between the train station and the bus station:

As an alternative, if you are going to Brecon from London or the south then I think its worth considering going via Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil railway station and then by bus. This alternative is described on the page here.

When you arrive at Abergavenny station, if you have arrived from the north then you need to cross the bridge, if you have arrived from Newport and the south then just exit the station on that side.

There are some busses that stop at the end of Station Road but not all so I find it saver to walk to the bus station.

I walked from the train station to the bus station in Abergavenny there is a path which goes through some housing estates to the bus station.

Outside the station turn right and along the car park. picture

Turn right into Hollywell Crescent:

When you get to the main road (Monmouth Road) turn right and over the river bridge:

The bus to Brecon is the 43 or X43. There is one bus about every hour and they alternate between the 43 and X43. The X43 goes the fast route mostly along the A40, the 43 goes on a more scenic route near the River Usk and the canal.

When I went Williams Coaches operated these routes: https://www.williams-coaches.co.uk/timetable but always check before you go as franchises can change.

Bus 43 and X43 went from stand 5 at the bus station here:

When the bus gets to Brecon get off at the bus interchange:

Brecon Bus Interchange to HF House

From Brecon bus interchange it is an easy walk to the HF House as described on the page here.

Remember English bus passes don't work in Wales so you will have to pay for your bus ticket (unless the journey starts or ends in England which this does not). bust ticket

About This Site

Here is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited.

The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost.

This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website.
