Whitby has some very nice walks along the coast.
If you are walking along the coast you don't have to start by going down to Whitby there is a disused railway line (Cinder Track) which goes behind Larpool Hall which you can walk along in either direction. This allows a more gentle route to the coast.
The town can get very busy in season especially when they have a Goth Weekend in May and Halloween.

There is a large train station in the centre of Whitby unfortunately there aren't many trains, only a few per day. The trains go to Middlesbrough and Newcastle which is not very convenient if you are coming from London or the south.
I usually use the branch line from York to Scarborough and then catch a bus to Whitby. These buses are reasonably frequent. An advantage of this route is that you can get off the bus just before Whitby at Sainsbury's or Eskdale Road because you don't want to walk all the way up from Whitby to the house with your luggage.
I think its worth considering staying over for a few nights at Scarborough, to break the journey, on the way to or from Whitby. There are Premier Inns or Travelodges at Scarborough, HF once had a house there but not now. I have put more details on the page here.
From Scarborough catch a bus to Whitby.
The centre of Whitby is very crowded and it is a long walk up to the HF house so it is best to get off the bus just before Whitby at Sainsbury's or Eskdale Road.

Rooms to Avoid
Room 7 is a nice enough room except that it is above the kitchen and a loud fan switches on and off through the night. Room 6 and other rooms above the kitchens are just as bad.

Whitby Town and Harbour
If you walk down to the centre of Whitby there are some footpaths to avoid most of the road walking. Walking to the centre of Whitby involves some descent and therefore ascent in the other direction. It is also possible to catch a bus. I have put some options and pictures on the page here.
Runswick Bay
I took a bus to Runswick Bay and walked back, along the coast, to Whitby.
You could stay on the bus a bit further and walk back from Staithes but that walk was a bit long for me so I preferred the shorter walk from Runswick Bay.

Esk Valley Way
Depending on how far you want to walk you could either get off the bus at Egton, Grosmont or Sleights and then walk back along the Esk Valley Way which roughly follows the river Esk and the Esk Valley Line.

Robin Hood's Bay
I like walks where I can catch the bus out and then walk back to the house, there are several options here:
- Walk back along the old railway track (the Cinder Track) this is the most direct route and as a former railway it's a more gentle ascent.
- Walk back along the coast on the cliffs (Cleveland Way and via the abbey this is more scenic but has more up and down. 8 miles or 12.6km.
Or these two could be combined to have a circular walk. If walking to Robin Hood's Bay and back is too far you can cut between these two beyond Oakham Wood.

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
