Walk from Robin Hood's Bay to Whitby

I like walks where I can catch the bus out and then walk back to the house, there are several options here:

Walk back along the old railway track (the Cinder Track) this is the most direct route and as a former railway it's a more gentle ascent.
Walk back along the coast on the cliffs (Cleveland Way and via the abbey this is more scenic but has more up and down. 8 miles or 12.6km.

Or these two could be combined to have a circular walk. If walking to Robin Hood's Bay and back is too far you can cut between these two beyond Oakham Wood.

Robin Hoods Bay by Bus

Catch X93/X94 bus toward Scarborough where Eskdale Road joins the main road which is about 15 min from Larpool Hall (but allow longer). The bus stop is next to the school and opposite the cemetery:

Get off the bus at Thorpe Lane above Robin Hood's Bay.

Down to Robin Hoods Bay and Back

From the bus stop there is an option is to walk down to Robin Hood's Bay , its quite steep and you will have to walk up again to start the walk.

There are steps on one side of the narrow road.

At the bottom there are some pubs and narrow lanes:

Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby along the Sea Cliffs

From the bus stop go back the way the bus came along Station Road. After Grosvenor Hotel turn right along Mount Pleasant North and follow signs to Cleveland Way.

Most of the route is along the top of the cliffs so there is quite a lot of ascent and decent:

Out to sea I saw some small fishing boats and round the bay & whale watching cruses.

Past Whitestone Cliff lighthouse:

Through caravan park.

There are a couple of seats.

At the top of the 199 steps turn left along a narrow footpath along the right of the buildings. The path gradually goes down and joins the road. Turn right just before the road goes steeply up. Around the outside of a new housing development next to the river Esk after going under the road bridge turn left and go up to the road. Turn right and go along Larpool Lane and then Larpool Drive to the house.

Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby along Former Railway

If you want a walk without too many steep hills you could catch the bus to Robin Hoods Bay and walk back to Larpool Hall along the former railway. This is called the Cinder Track and it takes you directly to Larpool Hall.

About This Site

Here is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited.

The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost.

This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website.
