This page is about a walk back to the house from Mulgrave Woods. For other information about staying at Whitby see the page here.

The estate is only open to the public Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays also closed all May.

When it is open you can walk through the woods and see the castle ruins.

I walked from Larpool Hall to Whitby bus station as explained on the page here.

At the bus station I caught the X4 bus toward Middlesbrough:

I got off the bus at Sandsend.

Sandsend to old castle 12th century ruin

I walked along the beck on a footpath on the left rather than going up the road on the right.

When I got to the car park I crossed the beck on this bridge and entered Mulgrave woods here:

There are multiple paths to the old ruin. The route I took went past this tunnel (but not through it) and up some stairs. picture
Landscape Folly / Estate Approach: In 1792, landscape designer Humphry Repton proposed changes for the estate (commissioned by Lord Mulgrave), which included creating a tunnel as part of a new ornamental approach through the woods and providing easy access through the ridge between becks around Castle Rigg near the 13th-century ruin of Old Mulgrave Castle picture

Old Castle to New Castle

The castle is on relatively high ground which is connected to the coast by quite a narrow ridge of high ground although the path goes down to cross Sandsend Beck.

On the high ridge you can see back to Whitby:

The new castle, end of 17th century castellated Georgian style.

The sign on the drive says private but I went just far along it to take this picture:

Another view back to Whitby:

The path emerges onto the A174 next to a gatehouse.

Can either walk down the road back to Sandsend or up the road to Lythe then footpath to coast and back to Sandsend along Cleavland way.

About This Site

Here is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited.

The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost.

This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website.
