Walks from Dolserau Hall - Barmouth Railway Walk

Other Walks

This page is about the Barmouth Railway Walk. For main page about staying at Dolserau Hall see the page here.

When self guided I usually do a walk, from the house, along the former railway through Dolgellau to Barmouth. Most of this is a very nice walk but there are a couple of problems:

Leave Dolserau Hall from the drive and turn left along the lane.

Cross the river, the former railway line at Dolserau Halt and the A494.

It looks like there is a path along the old railway line but, when I tried it, it did not go far and then you end up walking along the A494 which is not very nice. So I think its better to take a longer way round:

Follow the lane upward on the other side of the A494 (a few yards to the left). Don't go too far up the hill, keep to the road parallel to the A494 to Dolgellau. At Dolgellau cross the river and walk along the south bank, then cross back to the north bank for a short distance, following the old railway route.

At Penmaenpool there is a toll bridge:

The railway route continues along the bank of the estuary:

Catch the T3 bus back. Depending on the time of day the bus may not go beyond Dolgellau, in that case it is a walk or taxi back to the house.

About This Site

Here is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited.

The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost.

This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website.
