Scarborough
When traveling to Whitby, by train, it can make the journey easier and more relaxing to stay over for one, or more, nights in York or Scarborough.
They both have Premier Inns and Traveloges. Personally I do like taking the opportunity to see different cities when on the way to a HF holiday.
This page has information about staying in Scarborough. For information about staying in York see the page here.
Although HF no longer has a house at Scarborough it is still a good waypoint and/or a stopping off location on the way to Whitby. The branch line from York to Scarborough is a lot more frequent and convenient than the line to Whitby and there is a convenient bus service between Scarborough and Whitby.
On this page, I have also included some pictures of the former HF house at Scarborough
I have put the following topics on this page:
- Former HF House at Scarborough
- York to Scarborough
- Scarborough Station
- Scarborough Harbour
- Scarborough South Shore
- Scarborough North Shore
- Walk from Filey to Scarborough
York to Scarborough
You usually have to change trains at York for the branchline to Scarborough.
Scarborough Station
There are lots of interesting features at Scarborough station such as the ceramic tile map and the two backlit stained-glass-style windows celebrating poet Wilfred Owen.
Scarborough Harbour
Scarborough South Shore
This is the main beach in front of the Grand Hotel.
Scarborough North Shore
The North Shore has Peasholm Park an oriental themed municipal park
Former HF House at Scarborough.
Unfortunatly I never stayed at the HF house at Scarborough. However in 2022 (long after HF stopped using it) I took some pictures of it on my way to Whitby.
On the front it is 4 stories high but at the back it is more like 6 stories.
In 1998 HF got the Larpool Hall house at Whitby and so stopped using this house. For information about Larpool Hall see this page.
Walk from Filey to Scarborough
On the way to Whitby I stayed for a couple of nights at Scarborough which gave me a chance to do a walk from Filey to Scarborough as I have described on the page here.

About This SiteHere is some history of former HF houses I have visited (there are also some pages about getting to, and walking from, HF houses without using a car). Over the years I have had holidays in houses that HF have closed. I think it would be good if there were somewhere on the HF website where peoples memories could be stored and made available online. I know that HF have a paper history archive at Newfield Hall and there is an online book by Harry Wroe but I would see this as something HF could do which is more of a online community thing. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. |
